Before You Buy

Are you certain that you need a new printhead? We'd rather you didn't spend money if you didn't have to, so be sure to ask yourself the following questions before you make your purchase...

If your printer is telling you to replace a printhead, it might just mean that some of the nozzles are blocked and need cleaning.

A good way to check this is to perform a nozzle check print which will display a series of grids (one grid per colour). On the printer control panel, scroll to the [Settings/Adj] menu, select [Test Print], then select [Nozzle Check].

If the lines in the grids appear broken or faint, then this is a good indication that some of the nozzles are blocked. You can try a Head Clean A or Head Clean B to try and clear the blockages (see below).

Cleaning your printhead is a simple operation that can often revive the print quality without the need to purchase another. It's actually a task which should be undertaken fairly regularly in conjunction with Nozzle Checks, in order to keep your printhead in good working order. You can execute a printhead clean via the printer control panel - Scroll to the [Settings/Adj] menu, then [Maintenance], then select [Head Cleaning].

Head Clean A is a light clean which uses a tiny amount of ink to fire through the printhead in order to clear blocked nozzles.

Head Clean B is a deeper clean which uses more ink. This option should be used to clear stubborn blockages when a Head Clean A won't do the trick.

If the print quality does not improve even after you execute a Head Clean B, try repeating the procedure once or twice. If the print quality still doesn't improve then this is a good indication that the printhead has reached the end of its useful life and you may need to purchase another.

As a 2016 accredited Canon large format partner, all of the printheads that we supply are sourced from official UK distribution and come with a full 1 year warranty, including the printheads that ship with our brand new printers.

If your printer is less than 1 year old and you've tried the steps above without success, you may be entitled to a replacement printhead free of charge, so contact us on 01737 246 173 to confirm your eligibility.

Printheads supplied by other dealers may not be covered by the UK warranty scheme, so be sure to check with us or Canon's large format team on 01737 229 198 if you are unsure.

Your maintenance cartridge is effectively a 'waste ink tank' where residual ink is drained to after printhead cleans and borderless printing.

If your maintenance cartridge is displaying 40% or less 'free space' when you come to replace a printhead, then we recommend that you have another maintenance cartridge at the ready.

But why? Changing a printhead can use as much as 30% free space, but the advertised free space only depletes in 20% intervals. Ordering a maintenance cartridge along with your new printhead will ensure that you don't get caught without a spare, having to place another order and incurring an additional delivery charge.
